Is My Coin Rare? Find Out Instantly with a Photo

Rare coins hide in plain sight — in change, in old collections, in jars that haven't been opened in decades. Coin Value Identifier flags key dates, low-mintage coins, and error coins so you'll never accidentally spend something valuable.

What makes a coin rare

Rarity in coins comes from three main sources: low original mintage (few were made), high attrition rate (most were melted or circulated into unusable condition), or an error in the minting process (doubled dies, off-center strikes, wrong planchet strikes). A coin doesn't need to be old to be rare — some modern coins with minting errors are worth thousands of dollars.

The app flags each of these categories for identified coins, showing mintage figures, survival estimates, and notes on known varieties that affect value.

Key dates and rare varieties to know

Some of the most valuable coins that still show up in circulation: the 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent, the 1916-D Mercury Dime, the 1932-D and 1932-S Washington Quarters, and the 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln Cent. The app identifies all of these and hundreds of other key dates and varieties automatically from a photo.

Beyond US coinage, the app covers key dates in major world coin series — so whether you're looking at a British Florin, a Mexican Peso, or a Canadian Dollar, it will flag rare issues appropriately.

Error coins — the most underappreciated source of value

Minting errors are among the most frequently overlooked coin values. A doubled die obverse on a common Lincoln Cent can be worth hundreds of dollars in circulated condition. An off-center strike on a modern quarter can be worth $50–$500 depending on the degree of misalignment.

The app's error detection scans for doubling, misalignment, die caps, and wrong planchet strikes. If an error is detected, the result includes an explanation of what the error is and the typical value range for that type of error coin.

What to do if you find a rare coin

If the app flags your coin as potentially rare or valuable, the next step depends on estimated value. For coins potentially worth over $100, consider sending it to PCGS or NGC for professional grading and authentication — their certification significantly increases buyer confidence and realized sale price. For lower-value coins, dealers, coin shows, and online auction platforms are all good markets.

Do not clean the coin. Even gentle cleaning removes the natural patina that experienced collectors and graders expect to see, and a cleaned coin is worth significantly less than an equivalent uncleaned example.
