Identify Old and Antique Coins Using Your iPhone Camera

Old coins can be difficult to identify — the text is often worn, the imagery unfamiliar, and the mint marks subtle. Coin Value Identifier uses AI trained on thousands of historical coins to return a name, origin, and value estimate from a single photo.

Why old coins are hard to identify by hand

Coins from previous centuries often have Latin inscriptions, unfamiliar royal portraits, and obscure mint marks that require specialist knowledge to decode. Even experienced collectors sometimes struggle to distinguish between close variants of a coin — a detail that can mean a difference of hundreds of dollars in value.

The app cross-references physical characteristics including size, design elements, inscription fragments, and edge details against its database of historical coinage from the US, Europe, Asia, and beyond.

How to photograph an old coin for best results

Place the coin on a neutral background (white or gray paper works well) in even, diffuse light — avoid direct sunlight or flash, which creates glare that washes out design details. Take separate photos of the obverse (front) and reverse (back). The app can analyze both sides and combine the information for a more accurate identification.

Clean coins gently before photographing if there is dirt obscuring details, but do not polish or chemically clean old coins — this permanently damages the patina and can destroy significant numismatic value.

What information you get

For each identified coin the app returns: the official coin name and denomination, the country and mint of origin, the year or date range of issue, the current melt value (for silver and gold coins), and a market value estimate based on visible grade.

You also get historical context — who is depicted on the coin, what the inscriptions mean, and notable design features that distinguish this issue from similar coins. This makes the app useful for learning about history alongside valuing your collection.

Building a catalog of your antique coins

Every coin you identify is automatically added to your collection catalog with the photo, identification, and value. Over time you build a searchable record of everything you own — useful for insurance documentation, estate planning, or simply tracking what you've found.

Export your catalog as a PDF to share with a dealer, auction house, or appraiser. The report includes photos and all identification details in a clean format that professionals can work with directly.
